APENA AYOMIDE MATHEW'S WORKS AND PROFILE
Apena Ayomide Mathew graduated
from Lagos state polytechnic with an upper
credit in painting 2017.
He had an informal art training in universal studios of art
prior to the time he got admission into school. He has participated in various
group exhibitions in Nigeria and UAE, he also did a solo exhibition in kano state,
Nigeria, 2018.
And he has delivered satisfactorily in commissions. His keen
interest in human forms, anatomy and the effect of light on nature obviously
dominated most of his artistic expressions. He believes"Art is the ability to copy
and complete nature in it's incompleteness using beautiful strokes of colour.
Below is his statement;
"I discovered my drawing interest and ability right from my
early days as a child. I would draw from
an illustration pamphlet called "Supa Strikas". I have continued pushing
this interest and ability since then. I initially trained as an apprentice in Ibadan,
Nigeria before proceeding into an academic institution for art training. I studied
art and majored in painting at Lagos State Polytechnic, Lagos, Nigeria and graduated
in 2017 with Higher National Diploma. Since then, I have continued practicing and
teaching drawing and painting as an instructor at Kano State Polytechnic, Nigeria.
As music expresses human feelings with tones and literature
expresses human feelings using words, I aim to express emotions and feelings through
my representational portrait paintings. Through my works, I am also interested in
discussing identity and culture. I have been working traditionally using oil colour
on canvas and sometimes I experiment with collage. I explore basic formal elements
and this has always been depicted in the way I use line, colour and texture in my
paintings.
The expression of light on a person's gesture intrigues me
because I believe the eyes don't lie. The expression on people's faces are not permanent,
so I tend to capture the moment of my subject before it fades. I do this by the
use of resplendent colours that would bring back a great memory of that particular
moment when the work is seen later.
My work expresses spontaneous expression, subjective and artistic
temperament which includes deep thoughts, emotions and other internal state of mind.
I depict this by laying emphasis on accurate reflection and depiction of light.
I am interested in capturing the moments, mood of my subjects which are sometimes
depicted within atmospheres or landscape that would negotiate geographical location
and identity".
